Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Birth Doula?

A: A Birth Doula is a professional, trained labor support person. We do not provide clinical care (i.e. cervical checks, medical exams or catch babies), but we do provide continuous physical and emotional support. Doulas serve mom, dad and siblings starting in late pregnancy and into postpartum. Think of a Doula as your personal guide through this incredible journey.

Q: Does a Doula take Dad's place?

A: Absolutely not. Doulas are there to support Dad and help him be the best partner possible. A good Doula NEVER pushes dad out of the picture or gets in his way. Dads and Doulas make a great team!

Q: Do you attend hospital births?

A: Yes, I attend births in hospitals, at home and in birth centers.

Q: Is Lamaze all about breathing? Hee-hee-hoo-hoo?

A: No. In fact I've never even practiced "hee-hee-hoo-hoo". That was a product of the media's portrayal of Lamaze in movies and T.V. shows. We do talk about the importance of breathing and how focusing on your breath can be comforting during labor, along with many other comfort measures and relaxation techniques.

Q: How much is Lamaze class and do you offer any discounts?

A: Lamaze group or private education is $350. I do not offer discounts on private education, but I do on group classes. There is a 10% discount for anyone who has signed a contract with a network Doula and I also offer a couple sponsored spots per class for families in need. If financial issues are holding you back from getting the education you deserve, please reach out. All inquiries are kept confidential.

Q: What time is Lamaze group class?

A: All group classes are 6pm - 8pm, CST.

Q: Can I come to Lamaze alone?

A: Of course. Your class fee covers the cost of you and one support person of your choice. This can be your spouse, mother, sister, Doula, friend, etc. However, if you prefer to come alone that is perfectly acceptable.

Q: Do you offer discounts or sliding scale on your Birth Doula Services?

A: I do not, but the network has many Doulas who charge a lesser fee for their services. Be sure to interview several Doulas from the My Sunshine Birth Network.

Q: Is it a struggle to keep your placenta at the hospital for encapsulation?

A: No. They simply request that it leave the hospital right away instead of hanging out in the room with you. It is a hassle free process and they will have you sign a release form. They deal with this all the time and you will not be the first person to ask to retain ownership of their placenta.

Q: Are you available to be my Doula?

A: I have Doula availability January - April and then October - December of every year. If your due date falls in those dates please inquire about services. If your due date is in the summer feel free to contact me for a doula referral.
